Taiwan is an island nation in East Asia off the coast of China. The Republic of China was founded in 1912 on the Chinese mainland and withdrew to the island of Taiwan in 1949 after the defeat in the civil war against the Communist Party. Today, Taiwan is a technically advanced democracy with a population of about 23.5 million people. Due to the One-China policy, Taiwan is recognized diplomatically by only a few countries. Major landmarks include Taipei 101, Taroko National Park and Sun Moon Lake.
