Tanzania is an East African country on the Indian Ocean, bordered by Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. With a population of about 62 million, it is the fifth largest country in Africa. The country consists of a coastal plain, savannahs and a plateau in the south that extends to Lake Malawi. The Serengeti in the north of the country is one of the most famous national parks in Africa. Tanzania is also home to Africa's highest mountain, the Kilimanjaro massif, whose highest point is Uhuru Peak on Mount Kibo (5895 m). Since its independence from the United Kingdom in 1961, Tanzania has been a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
