Togo is located in West Africa and borders Ghana, Benin and Burkina Faso. In the south, it extends to the Gulf of Guinea, where the capital Lomé is located. After German colonial rule until the end of World War I, Togo became a French protectorate and gained independence in 1960. Togo is known for its colorful markets, beaches and traditional festivals. Major attractions include the Fazao-Malfakassa National Park, Lake Togo and the traditional market in Lomé.
