Trinidad and Tobago is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea, consisting of the islands of Trinidad and Tobago and numerous smaller islands. The island of Trinidad was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498 and later belonged to Spain before being conquered by Great Britain in 1797. In 1802, Trinidad and Tobago were ceded to Great Britain as separate states and united in 1889. The country gained independence in 1962 and became a republic in 1976. Trinidad and Tobago is known for its African and Indian culture, which is reflected in large and well-known festivals such as Carnival, Diwali and Hosay. The islands are also known as the birthplace of the steelpan, limbo and musical styles such as calypso, soca, rapso, parang, chutney and chutney soca. Places of interest include Maracas Beach, Pitch Lake, Caroni Bird Sanctuary and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
