Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia, bordering Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran and the Caspian Sea. It has about 6 million inhabitants and is known for its large gas deposits. The country has long been dominated by various empires and cultures, including the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. It has been independent since 1991. The country's main attractions include the ancient city of Merv, the Karakum Desert and the modern capital Ashgabat.
