The United States of America (USA) is located in North America and is the third largest country on earth. The history of the USA begins with the discovery by Europeans in the 16th century and the settlement by British settlers. In 1776, the colonies declared their independence from Great Britain and founded the United States. The country is characterized by its cultural diversity, economic strength and democratic form of government. Among the most famous landmarks are the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the White House in Washington D.C. and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
