Uzbekistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, surrounded by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. The country is known for its rich history, especially related to the Silk Road and the legacy of the Timurid Empire. The historic cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are home to numerous architectural masterpieces from the Timurid period. Today, Uzbekistan is a secular republic with a presidential government and a gradual transition to a market economy.
