Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean, consisting of 83 islands, east of Australia and north of New Zealand. Vanuatu's history dates back up to 3,000 years and was shaped by Melanesians, European explorers and colonial powers. Vanuatu gained its independence from Britain and France in 1980, and is characterized by its diverse culture, over 100 indigenous languages and traditional indigenous way of life. Sights include the active volcano Mount Yasur, the champagne beaches of Espiritu Santo and the diving paradise SS President Coolidge.
