Dornbirn

Travel Guide & Travel Information
With about 50,000 inhabitants, the city of Dornbirn is the most populous city in the westernmost Austrian province of Vorarlberg and ranks 10th in the list of the largest cities in the Alpine country.

Dornbirn gained importance towards the end of the 19th century with the then rapid development of the textile industry. Although almost nothing remains of it today, Dornbirn is still the largest workplace and the economic center of Vorarlberg.

Where to go first in town?

The landmark of Dornbirn is the Red House. It is located on Dornbirn's market square next to the city's parish church of St. Martin and was built in 1639. At that time it was used as an inn and dance hall. The flight of steps in front of the house often served as a podium for official announcements.

Today it still houses a restaurant and an ice cream parlor. But for the people of Dornbirn, it is still the beating heart of the city's history.
