The former coal and steel metropolis of Essen presents itself to its guests surprisingly close to nature. It is considered the third greenest city in Germany and was awarded the title "European Green Capital" by the EU in 2017. In addition to the Grugapark, Lake Baldeney and the famous "Villa Hügel" of the Krupp dynasty, you should not miss a visit to the Zollverein coal mine. The once largest coal mine in the world stands for the change in the coalfield like no other place. Today, exhibitions, events and a variety of gastronomy invite you to stay here. It was awarded the coveted title of "UNESCO World Heritage Site" in 2001. The former European Capital of Culture offers a rich variety of activities in every respect.

Essen is a German city in the west of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, around 30 km northeast of the state capital Düsseldorf. There are about 583.000 inhabitants living in Essen.

Essen also includes the formerly independent municipalities of Kettwig and Stadt.
