The island of Faial can hardly conceal its volcanic origin: right in the middle of the island, a caldera up to 400 meters deep bears witness to the elemental force from which the Azores were once formed. A hike on the steeply sloping crater rim is one of the most popular activities on Faial, for which you will be rewarded with spectacular views over to the island of Pico, which is only a few kilometers away. In addition, Faial is known for the port town of Horta, which has been a mandatory stop for sailors for many years, all of whom have immortalized themselves on the colorful harbor pier. In addition, the island offers good opportunities for hiking and has some sandy beaches.
