Naxos
The largest island in the Cyclades, Naxos, is located a good 30 kilometers south of Mykonos in the Aegean Sea. It is separated from its western neighbor island Paros only by a strait about six kilometers wide. In the east, the shores are very steep, while towards the west the land turns into a large plain. From north-northeast to south-southwest runs a mountain ridge with Mount Zas (also Zeus or Oxia) roughly in the center. These are imposingly steep granite cliffs. The gorges are mostly strikingly green and the villages shine in bright white in the sunlight. You should also look for the ancient ruins on this island.
Naxos is inhabited by about 18,000 people. Many of them live in the port town of Naxos in the flat west of the island. Here the ferries arrive or depart and you can see the bustle of the fishing boats, but also the pleasure craft. Naxos is the seat or rather the diocese of the Greek Orthodox bishop of Naxos-Paros.
The ferry port on the island of Naxos offers connections to the other Greek islands of Donoussa, Tinos, Folegandros, Amorgos, Mykonos, Kimolos, Thira, Thirasia, Paros, Ios, Milos, Kythnos, Crete, Syros, Schinoussa, Astypalea, Sikinos, Koufonissi, Kea, Iraklia, Sifnos and Anafi, as well as to the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio on the Greek mainland. A total of 26 routes are offered here several times a day by the shipping companies Cyclades Fast Ferries, SeaJets, Golden Star Ferries, Blue Star Ferries, Small Cyclades Lines, Minoan Lines and Hellenic Seaways.
Donoussa
If you have plenty of time, you should check out the small but scenic island east of Naxos. Only 150 inhabitants, living mainly in the port town of Stavros, try to attract tourism to the very barren and rocky mountain island. A recommended activity is hiking. This is only possible with good shoes and physical fitness. In the bathing bays you will meet only a few people. If you are looking for peace and solitude and are content with little, you will find a small paradise on Donussa. Wonderful bathing bays, especially in Kedros near the village, and beautiful accommodations offer excellent conditions. Cozy inns in rustic style complete the offer.
