Overview of all ferry routes to and from Gotland:

Route map: Ferries to Gotland

As the largest island in the Baltic Sea, Gotland was for a long time only accessible by ferry from the Swedish mainland or by plane (apart from cruise ships). With the Rostock - Visby route, there is finally a direct route since 2021, which makes the journey from Germany much easier.

Direct from Germany to Gotland

The new route from Rostock to Gotland is offered by the shipping company HansaDestinations once a week. Visby, however, is only a stopover on the longer Rostock - Stockholm route. The ideal option is to travel overnight: departure from Rostock is Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m., and the port in Visby is then reached at around 9:30 the next morning. The journey to Rostock is thus possible from most parts of Germany without an overnight stop.

From Sweden to Gotland

The alternative to the direct journey from Germany are the ferries of the shipping company Destination Gotland from the Swedish mainland: from Oskarshamn, Nynäshamn and Västervik. Departure times and prices on the three routes vary greatly depending on the date and load.

Tips for the journey from Germany

If you do not choose the direct ferry to Gotland, you should not underestimate the journey to the ferry port in Sweden. The nearest port from Germany in Oskarshamn is still in southern Sweden, but the distance is relatively long. For the journey from Malmö or Copenhagen you need between 4 and 5 hours, the journey should therefore be well planned. On many days there is only one departure in Oskarshamn (in the morning between 10 and 12 o'clock) and one in the evening (mostly between 19 and 21 o'clock). There are departures in the afternoon only on relatively few days in the high season.

Stopover in Sweden

If you want to catch the Gotland ferry in the morning, you should stay overnight in the area around Oskarshamn if possible. Only in this way you can reach the ferry the next day without stress and arrive in Visby already in the afternoon. This variant is also ideal for families with children, for whom the ferry in the evening is too late. Oskarshamn is also a good starting point to visit the Astrid Lindgren World in Vimmerby.

For the journey from Germany to Oskarshamn there are numerous variants with and without ferry, which we have summarized in the following articles:

Without an overnight stop directly to Gotland

If the evening ferry in Oskarshamn is ok for you, you can also manage the journey to Gotland in one day.

From Hamburg you need about 8:30 hours pure driving time to Oskarshamn. The fastest route is via Vogelfluglinie, but the alternative overland route via Denmark does not take much longer.
