Vulcano
Vulcano, the southernmost island of the Lipari archipelago, is considered the ancestral mother of all volcanoes. According to ancient legend, the god Vulcanus operated his forge here. When you see the steam of the fumaroles and breathe in the sulfur vapors, you can imagine how the ancient Greeks came up with this idea. The natural fango springs were already used by the Romans for spa purposes. The uphill hike to the crater is easy and quick. At the port you will find restaurants. The black lava beaches are a much loved attraction. You will never forget the sight of the Dead Field with the offshore fumarole zone. Bathing in the naturally heated sea will be a unique experience.
The ferry port on the island of Vulcano offers connections to the other Italian islands of Stromboli, Salina, Sicily, Alicudi, Panarea, Lipari and Filicudi, as well as to the ports of Naples, Reggio Calabria, Ginostra and Vibo Valentia on the Italian mainland. A total of 14 routes are offered here several times a day by the shipping companies SNAV, Siremar, Liberty Lines and Alilauro.
Stromboli
Stromboli has been a legend since the film by Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman. The island of fire was considered a natural lighthouse in ancient times. The volcano, which is still active today, was used by sailors for orientation. At night you can admire from the boat the eruptions followed by glowing lava on Sciara del Fuoco. There are also guided hikes up to Stromboli. Ficogrande, the island's black lava beach, is visually stunning but very rocky. About 500 people live on the island. In the northeast you will find the small town of Stromboli and in the southwest the hard to reach Ginostra. In the main town of Stromboli you can visit the church Chiesa di San Vincenzo.
