Fulda

Travel Guide & Travel Information
Baroque facades still characterize the city of Fulda: a circumstance to which it owes its nickname as a baroque city. In the heart of the baroque quarter lies the Fulda Cathedral, which today presents itself as the city's landmark. The Fulda City Palace, as a baroque building, also provides a very special tourist charm in the heart of the East Hessian city. In addition to the cathedral, Fulda is known for its important sacred buildings - including St. Michael's Church and Frauenberg Monastery. The long tradition of the city, which was founded in 774, can be seen above all in the historic city center. Today, Fulda is one of the most popular travel destinations within Hesse.

The old bishop's town of Fulda has one of the world's most beautiful Baroque ensembles with its Baroque Quarter. Another highlight of the region is the 950-meter-high Wasserkuppe, the highest mountain in the Rhön. One of Fulda's most famous sights is the Baroque Quarter, a unique ensemble of Baroque buildings from the 18th century. These include the cathedral, the cathedral deanery, the Paulustor, as well as several town houses.

The history of the city begins with the founding of the Fulda Monastery in 744 by its first abbot, Sturmius. For more than a millennium, the abbots of Fulda had a decisive influence on the fate of the city and the region. Fulda is located on the edge of the low mountain range Rhön, which was recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1991. Only 30 minutes by car from the city center is the Wasserkuppe, the highest mountain in the Rhön at 950 meters.
