The archipelago island lies directly on a narrow sound opposite the islands of Blidö and Yxlan. Impressive ferries pass through this sound every day on their routes across the Baltic Sea. Furusund was also an important shelter for various ships and their crews.
The tradition as a popular seaside resort is told today by the bathhouse and the society house, since time immemorial places of social communication in the archipelago. There is the theater "den Hammerska Ladan", where the famous singer Evert Taube celebrated successes - Taube also owned a cottage on Furusund.
Vacationers like to visit the old windmill from 1722, where exhibitions about the history of the region are shown. Röda Byggningen or the "Red House Romanov" is the oldest house on the island, a snow-white neighboring house called "Christiansborg", yellow pavilions at the harbor and especially the so-called Dove Spring are today considered reminiscences of Furusund's past as a fashionable bathing island.
The sailing harbor Ålandsviken is a popular port of call for sailboats and motorboats. There is a nursery and an art gallery on the island. Lively shipping traffic with ferries and motor ships, as well as with a traditional steamship, ensures Furusund's effective transport links in the archipelago off Stockholm.
Outside the summer bathing season, there are many sports activities on Furusund. Excursions lead to the nearby island of Yxlan with the village of Köpmanholm. A popular tour is to the neighboring island of Blidö, from where there are wide views over the open sea.
