There is a distance of almost 200 kilometers between the archipelago towns of Landsort in the south and Arholma in the north, and you would have to sail 80 kilometers from Stockholm to visit the outermost islet. In the middle of the over 6,000 square kilometer archipelago lies the island of Gällnö. Here there are dense forests and beautiful summer houses, as is typical of the islands particularly close to Stockholm. Gällnö is also characterized by the carefully preserved unspoiled archipelago environment with open pasture landscapes, with rocky outcrops and steep cliffs.

Gällnö is located north of Värmdö and east of the smaller island of Grinda. The main town is Gällnö in the west of the archipelago island. There are several stores and the post office here, as well as an award-winning youth hostel.
The island has been inhabited since the Middle Ages and from time immemorial people have worked in agriculture, as fishermen or hunters. The historical houses are particularly well preserved in various places on the island. Summer visitors have been coming here since the beginning of the 19th century.

Visits to the picturesque village, hikes, bike rides and walks are popular with vacationers, as are boat and kayak tours, which often lead to the neighboring island of Karklö. Also worth seeing is the large cave Jättegryta. It is located near the bay of Torsviken.
Hiking trails lead, for example, to Gallnönäs on the eastern tip. There is also a pier for steamboats coming from Nybroviken in Stockholm. In addition, Gällnö is easily accessible by bus, train and car all year round.
