Germersheim on the Rhine goes back to a Roman soldier camp (Vicus Julius), which existed until the 4th century. In 1090 the village was mentioned in documents for the first time, and in 1276 the Habsburg King Rudolf granted it city rights. Germersheim was and still is a military town with an old fortress, parts of which have been preserved. Sights worth seeing include the Fronte Lamotte (fortress park), the Weissenburg Gate and the Ludwig Gate, which houses a town and fortress museum.
