History of the street

Istiklal Caddesi, or the Street of Independence, is more or less the most famous street in Istanbul. It runs for three kilometres from Tünel Square to the bustling Taksim Square. A historic tram runs between the two squares.

In the 1990s Istiklal Street was converted into a pedestrian zone. Much of Istanbul's cultural life takes place around this street. Numerous cinemas and galleries line the way. During the day, it is a popular shopping street where it is wonderful to stroll. The magnificent Art Nouveau buildings to the right and left of the street provide a wonderful backdrop for this. In the evening, much of Istanbul's nightlife takes place here.

The street once housed a number of embassies during Ottoman rule and there are still consulates here today. Meanwhile, life on Istanbul's most famous street is thoroughly European. Independence Street is one of the most important business centers of the city.

If you stroll through the lively pedestrian zone on foot, you can stop off at one of the numerous cafés and enjoy the colourful hustle and bustle on the street. To get a glimpse of everyday Turkish life, ?stiklal Street is the perfect place.

Discover hidden passages

Tucked away on the street are a few passages that are worth exploring. Very famous is the Cicek Pasaji, or flower passage, which presents itself to its guests in a beautiful elegant ambience. In former times a flower market took place here. Today, restaurants are lined up next to each other and there are also some places that offer live music. Right beside the passage there is the fish market. Here you can find fresh fish in all variations and a visit to the colorful hustle and bustle even just to look is worthwhile.

On Istiklal Street you will find, among other things, the famous Galatasaray Gymnasium and in Pera Palas one of the oldest hotels in the city.
