Koblenz, with a population of over 113,000, is located in northern Rhineland-Palatinate. The historic city is considered the gateway to the castle ruins and terraced vineyards of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. In the center of the city, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers (known as Deutsches Eck), stands the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument. Visitors to Koblenz like to take the cable car to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on its hill, whose museums are well worth seeing. Further south on the riverbank is Stolzenfels Castle, a neo-Gothic structure with charming gardens. Koblenz is one of the oldest German cities, with its founding year given as 8 BC.
