With a good 28,000 inhabitants, Königsbrunn is currently the largest town in the district of Augsburg in its southeast and in the administrative district of Swabia. It was only declared an official municipality in 1842 and a Bavarian town in 1967. The nucleus of Königsbrunn was the deep wells constructed along the Hochstiftstraße through the Lechfeld as well as houses of the workers and settlers commissioned with it from 1833 on. The number of inhabitants increased dramatically after 1945 due to the mass influx of displaced persons from the former German eastern territories. The Lechfeld Museum in Schwabenstraße is dedicated to their fate. In the archaeological museum on the market square, artifacts from the Stone Age to the High Middle Ages can be admired, such as a Bronze Age stone cist found near Königsbrunn in 1917 and a Roman temple.
