Kristiansand

Travel Guide & Travel Information
Kristiansand - the strange beauty of the south likes to present itself as the center of the "Riviera of the North". Norway's fifth largest city (60,000 inhabitants) is situated on an almost square, flat peninsula at the mouth of the Torridalselv.

The city of Kristiansand

The sheltered location south of the large mountain ranges gives the city a climate with more sunny days than most other cities in the country. The weather is stable - the recreational opportunities for sun-seekers, water sports enthusiasts and families are almost inexhaustible thanks to the beautiful Skagenrak archipelago. In the warmest months, Kristiansand is a flower paradise.

The city was founded by the populist Danish king Christian IV, who is commemorated by several Danish, Swedish and Norwegian cities. The old part of the city on the west bank of the Otra bears the stamp of the Nordic Renaissance: rectangular streets and harmoniously inserted buildings have earned it the name "Quadratur Christians IV".
Kristiansand used to live from sailing, today from shipbuilding and industry.

Before entering the city, you can visit the church of Oddernes from the early years of the 12th century. The way finally leads over the big Otra bridge and Dronninensgate to the old town. The cathedral, market square and town hall are surrounded by characteristic 17th century houses. Christianholm Fortress is also a part of the city's history. For lovers of the Viking Age, Bronseplassen is a must. Not only do the Viking markets, which take place regularly in the summer, thrill visitors, but the reconstructed dwelling place also offers excitement for the whole family.
