The largest city in Lower Bavaria with more than 73,000 inhabitants is the seat of the administrative district of the same name in the southeast of the Free State. Landsberg is located on the Isar River and was first mentioned in documents around the year 1150. The city's first economic heyday from the 14th to the 15th century is commemorated by the "Landshut Wedding" festival held every four years in June or July. Historic churches such as St. Martin's, St. Jodok's and St. Nikola's as well as Heilig-Geist's and Heilig Blut's were also built at that time. Trausnitz Castle, the city residence in the style of the Italian Renaissance, and the Gretlmühle recreation area, which covers a good 5 km² and includes a floodplain forest, bathing lakes and sunbathing lawns, are also worth a visit.
