The Stockholm Archipelago, consisting of about 30,000 archipelagos and islands, spreads out like a huge fan in front of the Swedish capital. Among the larger islands of the central archipelago is Ljusterö. The archipelago environment, characterized by nature, is particularly appreciated by the people and thus many vacationers come for many years, many of whom end up staying forever. Thus, both the cultural and sports offerings as well as the general level of service on Ljusterö is particularly high.

Already two millennia ago Ljusterö was settled. The name "Ljusterö" is due to the shape of the island, because "Ljuster" means fish fork in Swedish. The islanders lived from fishing, agriculture and hunting. At the end of the 19th century, the island began to develop into a popular vacation destination.

Ljusterö is best reached by car ferry to Östanå. Östra and Västra Lagnö are peninsulas in the north of the island. On Östra Lagnö all accesses to the bathing places are handicapped accessible. Ljusterö Torg is about 5 kilometers from the ferry terminal. Here you will find many stores, boutiques, a pharmacy and the tourist information office.

Overall, there is no shortage of recreational opportunities: Popular activities include tennis and golf, as well as hunting. In addition, there are many opportunities for swimming and boating.
To the north, Östra Lagnö is a nature reserve with dense forests, hiking trails, and expansive views over Stockholm's outer archipelago.
Overall, Ljusterö consists mostly of hilly terrain with lots of pastures and farmland. In between there are a few lakes. About 50 meters high is Ljusterö Huvud in the south. In the forests there is plenty of game, there cavort foxes, hares, badgers, elks and red deer.

An excursion tip is to visit Linanäs. From this port of call for archipelago boat traffic, there are trips to smaller islands further out. At the guest harbor there is a restaurant and a bakery.
