Ludwigshafen am Rhein
Travel Guide & Travel Information
Ludwigshafen is the second largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate after Mainz. It is located opposite Mannheim on the left bank of the Rhine, and the two cities once belonged together. Until 1840, Ludwigshafen was Mannheim's Rhine redoubt. Today, the city is known as the home of former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and as the headquarters of BASF. Its landmark is the town hall, opened in 1979, and its most important monument is the pilgrimage church Mariae Himmelfahrt. Also worth seeing are the Ebert Park and the Peace Park, Ludwig Square and the Dumpling Fountain.
