Liljevalchs Konsthall is a contemporary art gallery on the island of Djurgården. It is owned by the city of Stockholm and hosts several exhibitions a year, mostly by young and still relatively unknown artists.

The history of the art hall

Liljevalch's Konsthall was opened in 1916, with financial resources from the estate of industrialist Carl Fredrik Liljevalch (1837-1909). It was the first art hall for contemporary art open to the public in the whole of Sweden.

Vårsalongen

Since 1921, from the end of January to the end of March, the exhibition Vårsalongen ( "Early January Salon") has been held , with works by unknown artists and amateur artists. The works are selected by a jury.

The building of the art hall

Liljevalchs Konsthall was built between 1914 and 1916 according to the plans of the Swedish architect Carl Bergsten (1879 - 1935). An eye-catcher is the 12 m high granite column in front of the entrance to the Kunsthalle, on which stands the sculpture "The Archer" by Car Milles.

In the fall of 2017, construction work began on an extension, which is scheduled for completion in 2020.
