National Archaeological Museum of Naples

The National Archaeological Museum, located on the outskirts of the old town, displays excavations from Pompeii, Herculaneum and other sites on the Gulf of Naples. These include unique treasures, many thousands of years old, such as sculptures, mosaics, frescoes and paintings.

The museum is located in a palace that was planned by the Spanish viceroy at the end of the 16th century and was actually intended to become a cavalry barracks. However, from 1612 the building was used as a boarding school for the university. After the university moved out at the end of the 18th century, the building was converted into a museum. Today, the collection is one of the largest collections of pieces from antiquity in the world: the exhibition covers 12,000 square meters.

In addition to a sculpture collection with figures up to three meters high, the "Secret Cabinet" with erotic exhibits from Pompeii is also very worth seeing. Here erotic representations, frescoes, figurines and sex toys are shown.
