The State Art Museum (often abbreviated SMK) is the largest and most important Danish museum of fine arts. It is located in the middle of three beautifully landscaped parks in the heart of the Danish capital, next to Rosenborg Castle.

Exhibits of great masters

Those interested in culture can experience over seven centuries of local and international art here. You can admire exhibits from the early Renaissance to exhibits of the latest contemporary art.

The SMK houses works by some of the most famous artists in history. The art collection originally came from private collections of Danish kings. However, today the collection belongs to the Danish people.
Highlights include the unique collection of Danish, Nordic and French art.

Visitors experience masterpieces of Danish and Nordic art from 1750 to 1900, with exhibits from the so-called Golden Age of Danish art by the greatest Nordic masters, such as C.W. Eckersberg, L.A. Ring and Vilhelm Hammershøi.
It is a speciality to find such an exceptional collection of French art in Denmark.
The exhibition is also known for wonderful works by progressive artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and André Derain.
During a tour, you can admire Danish art as well as international art after 1900 up to the present.
The exhibition gives an overview of recent art history. Well-known works of expressionism and surrealism are on display, as well as works of recent contemporary art. Represented are exhibits by well-known artists such as Ursula Reuter Christiansen, Per Kirkeby and Danh Vo.
Lovers of European art between 1300 and 1800 can marvel at the most important works between the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment and admire exhibits by Lucas Cranach and Andrea Mantegna.

Workshop for children

The lively museum offers a wide range of activities for young and old. In addition to interesting guided tours, visitors can also take part in various workshops. For families with children, there is the so-called workshop for children, where the offspring can show their creativity in the drawing room.

Cafeteria and SMK Shop

In the cafeteria, visitors can enjoy organic and seasonal food as well as cakes and pastries from the in-house bakery.

In this bookstore, museum visitors will find beautiful art volumes and coveted designer objects. Creative toys are offered for young art lovers.

Both the café and SMK Shop can be visited during regular opening hours. No admission ticket is required.
