Tate Gallery of Modern Art

One of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art
The Tate Modern Gallery is one of the world's most popular museums of modern and contemporary art. It is a former power station that overlooks the Thames and was rebuilt in 2000. Today, over 5 million people a year marvel at the works of van Gogh, Cézanne, Picasso and many more.

The way there

The journey may not be the destination, but it can be worth it. To get to the Tate Modern, it's worth taking St. Paul's station, where you can catch a glimpse of the imposing St. Paul's Cathedral and cross the Millennium Bridge to get to your destination. Now one of the most visited museums, it used to be simply the Bankside Power Station in the borough of Southwark. If you prefer to get off at Southwark station, just follow the orange painted lanterns that will lead you to the Tate Modern Gallery. To enjoy a breathtaking view of London completely free of charge, you should go to the highest floor of the Blavatnik Building, as well as the viewing terrace and balcony there.

The Exhibitions

There are two types of exhibitions to see at Tate Modern, the permanent exhibition and the temporary exhibitions. The former are not only free, but also incredibly extensive: the spectrum ranges from Cubism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Fauvism and Futurism to Pop Art. To list all the famous artists whose works can be seen there would be impossible. Among the most renowned names are van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Gauguin, Cézanne, Braque, Matisse, Dalí and Warhol. Not only classics, but also emerging artists, interactivity and avant-garde art find their place. The permanent exhibition is divided into areas, not art historical periods. Opening with Landscape, Still Life, History Painting, and Nude, today we're at Poetry and Dream, Structure and Clarity, Transformed Visions, Energy and Process, and Setting the Scene.

Much more to see

You'll find the bulk of the special exhibitions in the wings of the boiler house. Where generators and the turbine hall used to be, we find the current entrance hall where you can enjoy more temporary exhibitions. Other must-sees are the oil tanks, where you can admire installations and video art. Live concerts have also been held here. You'll also find a work of art or two in the restaurants and certain members' rooms. Kids will also get their money's worth, painting their own digital artwork or marveling at interactive art. When visiting London, a trip to the Tate Modern is a must for young and old alike!
