Thielska Galleriet is one of the most beautiful and important art museums in Sweden. It is located in a park on the island of Djurgården and has one of the most important collections of Northern European art of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The banker Ernest Thiel

Just as spectacular as the museum is the story of its founder, banker Ernest Thiel (1859 -1947). The son of a Belgian and a German Jewess, he was one of the richest men in all of Sweden at the end of the 19th century. A friend of many Scandinavian artists of his time, it was mainly their works that he acquired with his vast fortune, including those of Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors and Edvard Munch.

Due to the First World War, Thiel lost a large part of his fortune and had to sell his collection to the Swedish state. On January 26, 1926, the Thielska Galleriet Museum was opened to the general public.
