The island of Öja is considered the southernmost point in the Stockholm archipelago. The elongated island is also known for its famous lighthouse. It is called Landsort and has existed on the southern headland since 1660. The elongated archipelago island is 2.2 square kilometers in size. A network of hiking trails offers numerous opportunities for bird watching.

Sweden's oldest lighthouse and the attached pilot station are one of the sights on Öja. The lighthouse has been an important mooring point for shipping throughout the ages. It is built of meter-thick fieldstone walls. The lighthouse was first lit with open coal fireplaces, later with mirrored oil lamps and only at the end of the 1930s electrically. The beacon has been fully automatic since 1963.

Sightseeing highlights also include the labyrinth on Öja, which is supposed to grant fishing luck and fertility as well as protection from all kinds of maritime dangers by means of various monsters. Also worth seeing on the spot is the nearby chapel. On Öja there is a ceramics workshop, where besides ceramics also textile prints and painted glass are offered. In addition to the hostel, which is open all year round, a restaurant and a café provide gastronomic services for guests.

Unique are viewpoints to observe the bird migration. This is because the archipelago island, with its location far out to sea, a particularly mild maritime climate and largely ice-free winter months, is a popular resting place for bird migrations on their way south. There is also a bird observatory on Öja, from which guided tours of the nature reserve are offered during the spring and fall seasons.

Storhamn is the name of Öja's largest village - a picturesque and very lively municipality with two harbors for shipping traffic with the mainland and between the archipelago islands - and thus many vacationers can come to the island to enjoy the maritime nature: All around lies the Baltic Sea, in the interior of the small island there are dense forests with deciduous trees and pines. Beach fun is guaranteed on the quite child-friendly bathing beach at Själkroka, bathing cliffs are here at Bredmaren in the east of the island.
