If you really want to get to know a country, you should definitely go on a culinary foray. Helsinki is a true paradise for gourmets in this respect, with its lively open-air markets and historic market halls. In particular, the Old Market Hall, Vanha Kaupahalli, invites you to linger with its traditional ambience and is considered Finland's oldest market hall. Centrally located in the immediate vicinity of the market square, it opened its doors as early as 1889.

The building was designed by the Finnish architect Gunnar Nyström according to typical Scandinavian models. Since a complete renovation in summer 2014, the nostalgic hall with its smaller and larger stalls shines again in new splendor. From Helsinki Central Station you can reach the market hall in about 10 minutes on foot or alternatively get off at the tram station Kauppatori, which is located 100 meters from the entrance.

National and international delicacies for every budget

A visit to the old market hall in the Kaartinkaupunk district is a real experience for the senses, offering Finnish avenger and sausage specialities, spices, coffee and cakes as well as delicately prepared fish or salmon rolls. Those who prefer sweets can stock up on Nordic jam or freshly baked yeast buns (korvapuusti). Especially a cool rainy day is ideal for strolling from one food stall to the next. Here you can not only stock up on wine, cheese and chocolates, but also on fresh fruits and root vegetables.

But also international stands are represented. Among others, they offer delicacies from America, Spain or the Orient. Of course, vegans or people with a gluten intolerance will also get their money's worth by treating themselves to a smoothie or fresh juice at Mari's Smoothie.

Thanks to the variety of the changing offer, which is always inspired by the current season, boredom is guaranteed. For example, food lovers will enjoy fresh berries in summer, while seasonal soups such as pumpkin soup, beetroot soup or pea soup are on the menu in autumn.

Watch the hustle and bustle from tables at cafes and restaurants like Robert's Coffee or Story. A wide selection of breads and pastries can be found at the
