Perge, locally called "Perge Antik Kenti", is a historical site located near the major Turkish city of Antalya. Due to its size and long history under the rule of different cultures, it is one of the most popular destinations in the region.

Location & Directions

Perge is located in the area of the so called Turkish Riviera at the Mediterranean Sea, known thanks to its beautiful, long sandy beaches, which attract many travellers year after year. The ancient city is located about 14 kilometres inland from the coast. Antalya is about 16 kilometers away, so the site can be easily reached as part of a day trip. This is possible by bus, tram or individually by car. In addition, some tour operators and hotels offer tours alone or in conjunction with a tour group.

History

The origins of the settlement date back to the fourth century BC. It was probably continuously inhabited until its end, which is dated around the beginning of the 15th century. The ruling peoples included Hittites, Rhodians and Romans. Later, the city was under both Christian and Arab influence. Due to this long history, many different cultural traces can be found. The settlement was particularly important at the time of Pamphylia, of which it was the capital.

Finds

In Perge, large parts of the ruined city can be visited on foot. Among the most impressive finds are the stadium, which was one of the largest in its time, the market hall, the theatre and the bathhouse. But also some gates, figures, towers, temples and courtyards form fascinating testimonies of the city history. Columned corridors and halls bear witness to the dimensions of many buildings. Another highlight are the elaborate reliefs and frescoes depicting mythical and battle scenes. Attached to it is a museum where, among other things, restored statues, elaborately crafted coffins and everyday objects such as coins are on display.
