Ponta do Pico rises mightily from the island, the highest mountain in Portugal. The stratovolcano, its caves formed from lava and the magnificent views are the main attractions for visitors to the island. But the island of Pico has more to offer, such as the famous red windmills or the vineyards, which have even been declared a World Heritage Site. In addition, Pico, whose history as an island of whalers is documented in two museums, is today probably the best place in the Azores to take a tour for sustainable observation of whales and dolphins.
