Pozzuoli was founded in 531 BC by Greek colonists from Samos as Dikaiarcheia. Dikaiarcheia served as a trading port for the colony of Kyme and belonged to Magna Graecia. In 194 BC, the city was annexed by the Romans and renamed Puteoli. The city developed into one of Rome's most important trading ports, especially for grain shipments from Egypt.

Roman architecture and architecture

Under Roman rule, impressive structures were built in Pozzuoli, such as the mole, which protected the port from the southerly winds. It was 372 meters long and was supported by arched structures. Emperor Caligula also had an impressive ship bridge built here.
