Belgium is a parliamentary democracy, but the form of government is a constitutional monarchy. For this reason, the country still has a king who, among other things, can sign laws and appoint ministers. However, the royal family of the Belgians is actually from Germany, specifically the Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld family. When sightseeing in Brussels, you should definitely pay a visit to the Royal Palace. It represents a very fine example of the neo-baroque style. The palace is located on the central Rue Royale, but nowadays it only functions as the official residence of the king, as the royal family in turn resides in Laeken Castle. This castle is located just outside Brussels, to the north.
