Salzburg
The Salzach River divides Salzburg, the birthplace of the world-famous musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, into the Old Town on its left and the New Town on its right. While the pedestrian zones of the Old Town are dominated by architecture from the Middle Ages and Baroque eras, the New Town is home to Salzburg's 19th century urban architecture. The Getreidegasse of the Old Town attracts the most visitors: Here one finds not only Mozart's birthplace, which houses a museum, but also excellently preserved historic guest and residential houses, on the gables of which are emblazoned the dates of their construction or the names of their builders. Today, the so-called "Durchhäuser" serve mainly as shopping arcades, which is why the Getreidegasse has also become a popular strolling and shopping mile.
