The largest and most visited island of the archipelago shows impressively how diverse the Azores present themselves. You'll find Ponta Delgada, the largest and most modern city in the archipelago, and on the other side of the island, a quiet, green landscape where farmers often still get around by ox cart. Both tea and pineapple grow on São Miguel, and there are beaches of black sand and stretches of coastline with rugged cliffs. The volcanic origin of the Azores shows itself in the form of hot springs, which are used in some places for bathing and in others even for cooking traditional food.
