The Black Sea, which is on average 1200 meters deep and has few islands, has an area of about 450,000 square kilometers. Thus, this sea, which is connected to the Aegean Sea by the Dardanelles and the Bosporus, is about as large as Sweden. The Black Sea is located between eastern Europe, Anatolia and the Caucasus and is bordered by Turkey to the south, Romania and Bulgaria to the west, Ukraine and Russia to the north and Georgia to the east. The most important Black Sea coastal resorts include the cities of Varna (Bulgaria), Constanta (Romania), Odessa (Ukraine), Yalta on the Crimea annexed by Russia, Sochi on the "Russian Riviera", Batumi (Georgia) as well as Trabzon (Turkey).
