The Landungsbrücken in Hamburg are a 700 meter long pier for ferries and harbor tours. Originally, they were built to store coal. The first landing stages of the Landungsbrücken were built as early as 1839 and were intended to place any coal fires far enough out of the city so that they could be easily extinguished. Today, the Landungsbrücken are a good starting point for exploring the city. From here you can watch container ships, enjoy a harbour cruise or visit the fish market.

History of the Landungsbrücken

Located in the St. Pauli district, the Landungsbrücken were built for coal storage. In 1907, the first landing stage was replaced by floating pontoons accessible via movable bridges. From then on, these served more for passenger transport on the ferry lines and as a starting point for harbour tours.

Almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, the current piers were not completed until 1955. Characteristic of the adjacent building complex are the two light green domed roofs and the gauge tower with its clock and bell tower.

Landungsbrücken as a central starting point

The Landungsbrücken serve as an excellent starting point for tourists who want to get to know the most popular parts of the city. Huge container ships and cruise ships can be observed directly at the Landungsbrücken. Those who would also like to explore the city from the water perspective can take part in a harbour tour or use one of the ferry lines that are part of the public transport network of the city of Hamburg.
