St. Salvator's Cathedral has been the episcopal see of the diocese of Bruges since 1834.

Architecture and history

The three-nave basilica in its present form dates largely from the late 13th century, the neo-Romanesque tower from the 19th century. However, the church was not finally completed until 1877. The long building history also results in the diverse mix of styles from the Scheldt and High Gothic periods, as well as the Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque styles. The choir stalls were installed in the 15th century, the tapestries and sculptures date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In the 17th century the furnishings were renewed in the Baroque style, the wall paintings and the stained glass windows date from the 19th century. The brass lattice gate was forged in 1726, the carved picture decoration of the organ from 1719.
