With a population of just under 38,000, Steyr is the third-largest city in the state of Upper Austria after Linz and Wels. In the ranking of Austria's largest cities, Steyr is in twelfth place. The city is located in the foothills of the Alps on the border with Lower Austria and is primarily considered an important location for the automotive supply industry.

Where to go first in Steyr?

Due to its early historical upswing, Steyr offers a very diverse and varied townscape with buildings from the Gothic period through the Renaissance to modern times. Especially the town square is one of the best preserved old town ensembles in the German-speaking area.

The town hall is considered one of the most beautiful rococo buildings in Europe and the gothic "Bummerlhaus" at the town square number 32 is the landmark of Steyr. It was first mentioned in a document in 1450 and is believed to date from the 13th century.

Which museums are recommended?

On Grünmarkt 26 is the municipal museum of Steyr, which is thematically primarily dedicated to the subject of iron processing. On the ground floor, over 200 nativity figures from the collection of Count Lamberg are on display, created between the Biedermeier and Baroque periods. The museum is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm.

In a former air-raid shelter under Lamberg Castle is the so-called "Stollen of Memory". This is a permanent exhibition of the Mauthausen Komitee Steyr on the topics of forced labor and concentration camps. The focus is on the history of the resistance in Steyr.

What is in the immediate vicinity?

A popular destination for excursions is the castle ruin of Losenstein. This is one of the oldest castle complexes in Upper Austria. It once served as a fortress for the noble family of the Losensteins. The castle is freely accessible and stimulates the imagination of children through the old walls and the hidden places.

Those who wish can also take a nostalgic train ride on Austria's oldest narrow-gauge railroad from Grünburg to Steyr. The route has a length of 17 kilometers and leads with the steam slow train through the unspoiled Au landscape. The journey takes about an hour and costs 12 euros for adults.

Steyr Music Festival

The music festival in Steyr has been held annually in the summer since 1995. The Schlossgraben in Lamberg Castle serves as the venue for the festival's own productions.

Mainly musicals are shown. Over the years, musical classics such as "Chicago" and "West Side Story" have been on the program. But also friends of operetta do not miss out and could already admire pieces like "Die Fledermaus" or "Wiener Blut" in Steyr.
