Taksim Square in Istanbul: meeting place for young and old and starting point for activities. Busy junction in the Beyoglu district.

History of the square

Taksim Square is one of Istanbul's busiest squares, with a number of bus routes running through the busy square in the European district of Beyoglu. Taksim Square is located at the highest point of the area. The underground funicular runs from here to Kabata, the valley station located on the Bosphorus. The historic tram, which runs along Independence Street, has its turning loop at Taksim Square. From there, the tram runs through the pedestrian zone of Istiklal Caddesi.

In the 18th century, a long-distance water pipeline ended at Taksim Square, to the end of which a water distribution system was connected. Hence the name of the square, "Taksim" means "division". From there, mainly public fountains in Istanbul were supplied with water, from which the inhabitants of Istanbul took their water at that time. Only some palaces had a direct water connection.

Public place for meetings

Over time, Taksim Square served mainly as a place for meetings and demonstrations. In May 1977, a bloody incident occurred here in which participants in a trade union rally were fired upon. More than 30 people were killed and many injured. But many joyous events have also been celebrated here. Turkey's third place in the 2002 World Cup was celebrated here, as was winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2003.

In the middle of the busy square is the "Monument of the Republic", which commemorates the founding of Turkey in 1923.

Arguably the busiest point in the city of Istanbul, there are a number of shops and banks and numerous tourist attractions are located near the central square. Many hotels have also settled in the Taksim Square area. Those who choose their accommodation here could hardly choose a more central starting point for their stay in Istanbul.

Half of Istanbul meets at the lively square and so there is always a hustle and bustle here. Travellers should not let their valuables out of their sight, because many thieves also hang around here!

Personal tip

Taksim Square is a central hub of the city. Numerous buses run from here to the airports and the surrounding districts.
