The Trevi Fountain is not only Rome's largest fountain but also one of the most famous in the world. The fountain plays a role in numerous films and has become a real tourist magnet.

The largest fountain in Rome

The fountain is located at the end of an aqueduct that once supplied ancient Rome with water. There had already been a fountain on the site since the 12th century, and finally, in the 18th century, Pope Clement XII commissioned the architect Nicola Salvi to build the new Fontana di Trevi. The fountain was already inaugurated in 1735, although it was still under construction. The final completion took place in 1762, only after Salvi's death.

The artist made the forces of nature and the resulting threats his theme, so the centre of the fountain is adorned with the sea god Oceanos, holding two steeds by the reins. A wild and fiery horse and a calm one. The two different characters represent the different temperaments of the sea. Also the mighty roaring of the fountain, which you can already hear in the side streets, symbolizes the elemental force of the sea.

Tip of the editors

Obligatory for every visitor to Rome is to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain. If you do this, be sure to toss it with your left hand over your right shoulder, as this means you will definitely be returning to Rome. If you are still single, you should toss two coins, because legend has it that you will fall in love with a Roman man or woman. Finally, three coins will even guarantee you marriage.
