Trondheim - Norway's third largest city (160,000 inhabitants) is an unusually pleasant, lively friendly and cheerful city with southern-saloppy features in places. Until the Reformation, the city was the seat of the Norwegian archbishops and a place of pilgrimage.

The city of Trondheim

After the impressions from the surrounding countryside one expects at best a mousy harbor city, in which it smells of fish and tran. Instead, the visitor is greeted by a city full of color and shirt-sleeve charm: with wide streets, lots of green in the parks and lush blossoms in the gardens, followed by amusingly painted wooden houses, pretty strolling streets, open-air cafés, old-fashioned rattling and tinkling streetcars - with all the trimmings that make a city lovable and worth living in.

The centerpiece is the mighty cathedral, whose west façade is particularly splendidly designed. Pilgrims suspected the grave of Olav the Saint under the cathedral.

If you cross Gamle Bybrua from the cathedral, you are right in the middle of old Trondheim. This is how large parts of the city looked before the great fire of 1681. The old warehouses built on wooden piles are a popular Trondheim photo motif. Even today, the colorful and interlocking houses as well as the narrow streets characterize the district east of the river. Here, the mainly student nightlife bubbles until late into the bright summer nights. The numerous restaurants, stores and pubs are a magnet for locals and tourists alike.
