The volcanic island of Ustica is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea and belongs to the Autonomous Province of Sicily. Literary experts believe that it was already mentioned in Homer's Odyssey. Since the Bronze Age, the island has been inhabited by Greeks, Romans and Saracens, among others. Various excavation sites are open to interested visitors. Visitors can reach the island by ferry from Palermo. The landscape is characterized by volcanic rocks, historical Roman ruins and a large number of caves. Particularly famous is the shipwreck Secca della Colombara. The main source of income for the inhabitants is agriculture. A particular specialty is beluga lentils, which are used in a variety of local dishes.
