Completed in 1878, the Vasabron connects the two districts of Gamla Stan and Norrmalm. From Tegelbacken it crosses the Norrström and ends on the island Stadsholmen in front of the Bondeschen Palais and the Riddarhuset. Halfway across, another bridge, the Strömborgsbron, branches off to the small island of Strömsborg.
The approx. 200 m long bridge is named after Gustav Vasa (1496-1560), probably due to its proximity to the statue of the famous Swedish king in front of the Riddarhuset that is visible from afar. Until the construction of the Centralbron in 1959, the Vasabron was the most important connection between Norrmalm and Gamla Stan.
