Vaxholm is located on the archipelago island of Vaxön and is considered the capital of the Stockholm archipelago. Stockholm's center is close by, and the various transport links are first-class. A boat trip from the city center, for example, takes only about 50 minutes - and compared to the land routes, the waterway is a lot more appealing. Then the idyllic little town of Vaxholm awaits guests on the archipelago island of Vaxön, with colorful, mostly fawn-colored wooden houses, small alleyways, and shopping and restaurants.

The fact that the archipelago near the capital are comparatively large islands with dense forests is certainly true of Vaxholm. Here are also the most beautiful summer cottages, sports and leisure facilities en masse.

The town of Vaxholm has had a chartered town charter since 1652, and directly opposite the town is an old fortification built during the reign of King Gustav Vasa around 1450. The Vaxholmen fort is now a museum with interesting expositions about the archipelago island of Vaxön and its importance. The fort served to protect Stockholm from the sea side.
A visit to the fort is highly recommended for visitors to Vaxholm. The fortress served as a backdrop for various film productions, for example, Pippi's father was imprisoned here in the popular Pippi Longstocking film "Pippi in Taka-Tuka Land".

After visiting the fort, we recommend a leisurely Swedish coffee break at "Vaxholms Hotell," a fairy-tale building from 1901 with picturesque bay windows and a large sun terrace. The grand hotel "Saltsjöbaden" is also chic. It belongs to the most popular summer resort of Stockholm families and was built in 1893. The gleaming white facade is reminiscent of Monte Carlo. The eponymous place Saltsjöbaden on Vaxön is ideal for swimming and yacht watching.
