The southern Holstein town of Wedel, located between the Elbe and the Marsch, is not only famous 35,000-inhabitant town of Wedel is not only famous among ship lovers for its Willkomm-Höft ship welcoming facility, which is known far beyond the borders of Germany. There, in the Schulau district, located directly on the Elbe two kilometers upstream from Hamburg, ships arriving in Wedel are greeted with a cheerful "Ahoy!" and the respective national anthem. The pleasant medium-sized town with the "Wedeler Roland" as its landmark can score points with its marina, with the theater ship BATAVIA and with the museum dedicated to Wedel's most famous son, the sculptor Ernst Barlach. Also worth experiencing is the ox market, which has been held (almost) every third Wednesday in April for half a millennium and is combined with a folk festival, where cattle and horses are still sold by handshake.
