The former capital of the Burgundian Empire is located on the left bank of the Rhine in Rheinhessen. The place was founded by the Celts, the Romans maintained a camp here from 31 BC at the latest. The people of Worms claim to live in possibly the oldest German city, but this title is also claimed by Trier, Augsburg and Kempten respectively. Worms can look back on a great and proud history as an important site of the Nibelungen sagas and as a Luther city. Along with the cathedrals in Mainz and Speyer Cathedral, Worms Cathedral is one of only three Romanesque imperial cathedrals.
